Lovely U, Lovely Me
You have your bundle of joy and want to give him or her the best hair care. However, you may not be sure where to turn. There are few hair care shampoos available on the market that cater to both children and African American hair.
Yet, one thing is certain. You probably want to expose your child to as few chemicals and skin irritants as possible, whether that be through shampoos, styling techniques, and styling products. Well, there is help available. Although infant hair care requires special love and attention, it is very simple. Just follow the rules below and you will uncover your baby’s beautiful curl pattern while also fostering the perfect environment for healthy, African American hair growth.
Rule #2: Apply a small amount of oil to your baby’s scalp two times daily. This will moisturize the hair, help a thirsty scalp, and create an environment optimal for African American hair growth. Great oils to use are Beauty 4 Ashes Follicle Fuze Shea & Jojoba Oil. Jojoba oil is particularly excellent in preventing dry scalp and not producing an oily head or face. You can find it at wwwdiscoverb4acom. You can also use olive oil, although not a moisturizing, it can be found in many stores.
Rule #3: Avoid bad chemicals on your baby’s hair, these include Vaseline, petroleum, mineral oil, sulfates, and silicones. Be also certain not to apply lotions to your child’s hair that contain parabens. Parabens are proven cancer-causing agents. If you prefer a hair lotion, try Beauty 4 Ashes Puritea Tea-Rific 10 hair lotion. It is 100% natural and includes excellent natural oils for thirsty hair you want to grow, including jojoba, shea, almond, wheat germ, and castor. It will also define your baby’s curls. Also, Carol’s Daughter’s hair milk is an excellent moisturizer. Light and silky, it will soften your baby’s curls. You can find Puritea Lotion at wwwdiscoverb4acom. Carol’s Daughter hair milk can be found at wwwsephoracom.
Rule #4: Protect your baby’s hair with proper styling. If at all possible, leave your child’s hair as natural as possible. African American hair is already fragile, excessive heat and styling methods that pull the hair (i.e. ponytails) may only make your child’s hair more susceptible to breakage. Don’t pull your child’s hair too tightly and do not use cheaply fashioned rubber bands on your child’s hair. They can snag and pull, causing splitting and breakage. Do not brush your child’s head too harsh. Try using wide tooth combs instead.
Rule #5: Use due diligence to stimulate your baby’s hair growth. Protect your child’s head from damage or breakage during appropriate weather conditions. Babies’ heads need to be protected from all types of weather, especially excessive heat and cold. Also, buy a satin pillowcase for your baby.
Rest assured, your baby’s hair can grow and it will grow if you use the right techniques for their curly, ethnic hair. African American hair needs love and great care. To detangle African American hair even more, and encourage growth and bring out curls, also spray the hair with an even mixture of water and olive oil or grapeseed oil daily.

More commentsMy daughter had a dry skin issue since she was born, but I can't find the right shampoo for her skin until one of the friends we met in Hawaii. She recommended Shielo Hydrate line and I tried to use it on my daughter while we were there and it works great. I like the Conditioner better than the Shampoo because of the nice fragrant and my daughter still smell so good after all day playing and after a sweaty nap too.
100% also - you have to make sure any shampoo you choose is sulfate and chemical free. Thats another reason I went with Shielo Hydrate and will continue: no paraben, chemicals or sulfates - because that will make the dry skin worse.
My daughter is 1 and its like she have two differnt texture of hair in the front its curly likr baby hair and in the back its real dryand (nappy) like I want kno wat can I use to make it grow and misturize it at the same time,

Thnx a bunch. My daughter was born with a headful of BEAUTIFUL thick hair but it seems that since I've been combing it is breaking. Now I see it is my fault cause IVe been doin everything u said not to do from the ponytails to the vaseline. She still has a nice grade of hair as well as a nice amount but I'm glad I found this site before the situation worsened. Thanx a bunch!!!
My son is 6 months old and he has very soft and curly hair. I use mineral oil on his scalp after washing his hair with HoneyBee Shampoo. His hair is growing just fine but sometimes his hair looks a little dry. Any ideas on what I should do. Keep in mind that im half Puerto Rican so our hair is really fine and straight. Thank You !
I notice right off the mistakes that I was making when I got into my daughters hair growth...I was using mineral oil/vaseline & along with that buying up products that contain (PARBENS) Biggggg mistake! I started researching right away only to discover that mineral oil & vaseline clog tha pores....OkAy from there I started using shea butter even learn ta make my own shea butter mixes...along with that I started using coconut oil, olive oil, caster oil, sunflower oil,Vitamin E oil etc,etc,etc,....from this point my luh ones hair began ta flourish, flourish, whooo hoooo & the reason why is bcuz of my patients...I started researching more bcuz I wanted or want tha best for my daughters hair...she never for once had a prob with her hair falling out or baldness which makes me (smile) my other daughters howeva did have this prob...long story short began using organic & natural products & fall in luv with oils, oils, oils, make these ya best friend & watch the difference in ya child's hair...remember patients is the key to many thgs.Be blessed in YahWeh.My daughter was born also with a head full of thick her...since birth her hair hasn't grew anymore.I can put ponytails in it but anyway the shea butter you are talking about is it an oil because i was going to go out& get some.I'm just finding out that baby oil is bad for the hair& that's what I been using on her hair.
Hi, I have a 6month old with really manageable hair. It's really long at the top, in the back, and on the lower sides. But she doesn't have none in the front and on the sides and in the center of the back of her head. It was like this since birth. I started out doing nothing to her hair and I got no results. It started to get dry and break off. Then at 4months I started using Doo-gro oil and it seemed like it worked but my Mom told me that it'll only make it worse. So I stopped using it... She told me to use Baby Oil and Vaseline, BIG MISTAKE! Because that only made it worse and stopped growing! ... So I just started to use the Organics Olive Oil Sheen Spray. I just wanted to know is that good? (Olive Oil) And should I also continue with the Doo-gro?
Please reply back, THANKS!
I'm having problems with both my son and daughter. First my son; his scalp stays dry no matter what I put in his hair. I do use Selsun Blue with the red cap in his hair and dry and apply moisture with some type of grease before it dries. Or vice versa. I just dont know what to do. Sometimes he will have these little white patches in his head. For my daughter she is 5, Her hair is fairly long. Im not very experienced with the know-hows of hair doing. My mother wasnt very savvy either. But my thing is this. Her hair is extremely thick. I have to blow dry her hair before it dries or all hell breaks loose. So basicaly my problem is how can i control the amount of heat I apply to her hair. And for my son should I take him to his ped and see they can prescribe something for his dry scalp???
